Documentary Storytelling with Monarch

WSE's annual project with Monarch School in San Diego was different this year, which is not unusual. Each year for the past 5 years our projects are re-imagined and tweaked based on teacher and student input. Documentary storytelling has been the constant. Our students have learned from a variety of sources while engaging in various documentary practices. These include filming farmworkers in Calexico, photographing the historic streets and architecture of Barrio Logan, and making interviews with veterans, community activists and local artists.

In early 2021 COVID-19 protocols across San Diego County presented us with the challenge of school closure, and so we re-designed our curriculum to accommodate virtual learning. The project site linked below shows selected student assignments from WSE's semester-long project. We are proud of the work our students accomplished during a challenging year. Enjoy.
